STD Testing FAQ's

What is STD testing?

STD testing, sometimes called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) testing, screens you for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It’s a quick, convenient way to determine if you have an STI. Tacoma Urgent Care and Wellness Center offers STD testing with same-day results.

It’s important to regularly undergo STD testing if you’re sexually active with multiple people. Some STDs present obvious symptoms, but others don’t, so you might be at risk and not realize it. Confirming an infection can protect your partners and sexual health.

What types of infections can STD testing detect?

The Tacoma Urgent Care and Wellness Center team uses STD testing to detect several types of sexually transmitted infections, including:

  • Chlamydia
  • Genital herpes
  • Genital warts
  • Gonorrhea
  • Hepatitis B and C
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis

STD testing can also screen for chronic infections, such as HIV.

What does STD testing involve?

STD testing is quick and typically takes less than 30 minutes.

Your Tacoma Urgent Care and Wellness Center provider reviews your health history and asks about your sexual activity, including how many people you’ve recently had sex with and whether or not you used protection, such as a condom. Answer these questions honestly. Your provider needs as much information as possible to determine the most appropriate test for you.

Next, your provider completes an STD test. Depending on your health history, symptoms, and needs, they may recommend a blood or urine test, or a genital, throat, or rectal swab. After collecting the sample, your provider sends it to a lab for testing.

Tacoma Urgent Care and Wellness Center offers same-day results, and your provider will call you as soon as your results come in.

How are STDs treated?

Treatment of STDs depends on whether the infection is viral or bacterial and its severity. Your Tacoma Urgent Care and Wellness Center provider may suggest:

  • Antibiotics
  • Antiviral medication
  • Penicillin injections
  • Prescription creams or cryotherapy if you have genital warts

If you’re prescribed any medication, such as antibiotics, make sure to take the full course, even if your symptoms start to improve after a few days. Likewise, avoid any sexual activity until you’ve completed your treatment and your provider says it’s safe to have sex again.

If you’re concerned about having an STI, schedule an STD testing appointment at Tacoma Urgent Care and Wellness Center by calling the office or requesting an appointment online today.
