IV Therapy FAQ's

What is IV therapy?

IV therapy, sometimes called vitamin therapy, is an outpatient procedure designed to support your general health and/or nutrient levels.

During treatment, your Tacoma Urgent Care and Wellness Center provider inserts a thin needle into your inner elbow. The needle connects to a thin plastic tube called a catheter, which is attached to a bag with an intravenous (IV) solution containing vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

Once the IV is placed, the nutrients enter your bloodstream, bypassing your digestive system, so you can get the most benefit. The entire process typically takes 60 minutes or less, and you can return to work and other activities immediately after.

When should someone consider IV therapy?

IV therapy is safe and generally well-tolerated, although it can present risks. Some people use it to address nutrient deficiencies, such as iron deficiency anemia, while others use it to recover from certain medical conditions like headaches, jet lag, or dehydration.

IV therapy can also be used as part of your general wellness regimen. Although research is limited, some people say it gives them more energy or helps them feel better overall.

If you have a medical condition you’d like to address or are considering using IV therapy to support your overall health, the team can perform a physical exam and make personalized treatment recommendations.

What types of nutrients are used in IV therapy?

The Tacoma Urgent Care and Wellness Center team tailors IV therapy to each patient’s health history and goals. Even so, several nutrients are commonly used in treatment, including:

  • Vitamin C
  • B-complex vitamins, such as B5, B3, and B6
  • Vitamin B-12
  • Biotin
  • Magnesium
  • Glutathione
  • Amino acids
  • Electrolytes
  • NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide)

After reviewing your health history and discussing your treatment goals, your provider can recommend a custom IV regimen tailored to your needs.

Is IV therapy painful?

No. IV therapy is designed to be comfortable and stress-free. You may feel a small pinch when your provider inserts the needle into your arm, but otherwise you shouldn’t experience any discomfort.

While the IV solution enters your bloodstream, you can read, watch TV, listen to music, or take a nap. If you’d like, you can even bring pillows or a blanket from home to make the experience more comfortable.

Once your treatment is finished, your provider removes the needle from your arm and places a bandage.
