What is hypertension?

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a chronic health condition that causes the pressure in your blood vessels to be higher than normal. Over time, the excess pressure damages your organs, as well as your blood vessels, causing them to harden and stiffen, and increasing your risk of kidney and heart disease.

Hypertension is very common and develops without causing symptoms. Regular blood pressure screenings are important to help you stay on top of your health, especially if you’re over the age of 40. The team at Tacoma Urgent Care and Wellness Center checks your blood pressure every time you come to the office to monitor for changes.

How is hypertension diagnosed?

One high blood pressure reading doesn’t mean you have hypertension. To be diagnosed with hypertension, you need to have at least three abnormal blood pressures on three separate visits to the office.

The team at Tacoma Urgent Care and Wellness Center understands that many patients experience what’s referred to as “white coat syndrome,” which causes an increase in blood pressure due to their anxiety about going to the doctor. The team may check your blood pressure twice during your visit to get a more accurate reading.

They may also suggest that you invest in a home blood pressure machine if they have concerns about your blood pressure and want to get a better picture of what your numbers are like at home.

What treatments are available for hypertension?

Your provider can develop personalized treatment plans to help improve your hypertension. They take a preventive approach to care and may suggest diet modification and regular exercise to help bring down your blood pressure.

Losing weight can also significantly improve your hypertension. The team at Tacoma Urgent Care and Wellness Center offers a medically supervised and customized weight-loss program designed to help you lose the weight and keep it off.

If lifestyle modification doesn’t improve your hypertension, blood pressure medication may be prescribed. The type of medication recommended may depend on your medical history and overall health.
